Grabbed this the other day, and even though I rather mixed compilations, it's worth a listen, especially if you haven't heard the likes of 'Carla' by Ramadanman, Skream & Cluekid's 'Sandsnake', Pinch's mighty 'Qawwali', or any of Martyn or TRG's stuff. Former Wales, Arsenal and Celtic striker John Hartson is in a critical condition after emergency surgery on his brain following a cancer diagnosis.

At the weekend, 34-year-old Hartson was told he had testicular cancer.

The disease spread to his brain and on Wednesday, doctors confirmed it was also present in his lungs.

The father-of-three had undergone surgery at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, after being transferred from the city's Singleton Hospital.

A hospital statement read: "He is currently being cared for by the critical care team at Morriston and is receiving round-the-clock care aiming to stabilise his condition.

“ We have been overwhelmed by the support and goodwill from many thousands of football fans, players, clubs and sporting figures and we have drawn strength from this support ”

"He will resume radiotherapy and chemotherapy as soon as possible."

After being diagnosed with cancer on Sunday, Hartson was admitted to Singleton Hospital where further tests were carried out.

Since retiring from a glittering career in football in February 2008, the striker has worked as a television pundit.

Relatives issued a statement on Wednesday saying that all close family and friends "are continuing to support John in any way we can".

"He is receiving outstanding care from all the medical and surgical staff and we would like to thank everyone at both Singleton and Morriston, as well as the excellent ambulance staff," it went on.

"We have been overwhelmed by the support and goodwill from many thousands of football fans, players, clubs and sporting figures and we have drawn strength from this support."

The family also requested that the star's privacy, and that of his family, is respected as he continues his hospital treatment.

Officials at Arsenal have said the club is "deeply saddened" by news of his cancer.

The former centre forward joined Arsenal as a teenager from Luton in January 1995 and, in two seasons at Highbury, made 62 appearances, scoring 16 goals.

The player left Arsenal for West Ham United in February 1997 and continued his career with the Hammers, Wimbledon, Coventry City, Celtic, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.

"Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to take this opportunity to wish John, together with his family and friends, all the very best in the challenging times that lie ahead. Our thoughts are with you," the statement added.

During his international career, he scored 14 goals before stepping down in February 2006 to concentrate on his club football.

Hartson made his Wales debut in March 1995 in an away match against Bulgaria, often leading the line as a lone striker, until his last game in November 2005 against Cyprus.

Jet Li. No, not the chinese lad, but another man who can beat your head in - albeit in a slightly different way: with a barrage of Amen breaks and a ton of phat basslines. Jet Li's been a name on the Irish Drum N' Bass scene for quite a while now, but I had never had to opportunity to witness him in action until last Saturday night at Fusion, in Killarney, and he did not disappoint! He played exactly what I love to hear in a DnB set; big, fuck-off, belting tunes, that aren't too much in the 'jump-up' vein, but aren't too 'liquid-ey' and watered down either - stuff that catches you by the bollox and fires you on to the floor.......and the inclusion of a couple of ragga-infused efforts displayed his Jungle roots (always a great thing in my book). Managed to get some of the action recorded, and though there's not much happening visually, due to lack of light, Jet Li's soundtrack more than makes up for it......and he's a fucking Kerryman to boot - up ya boy ya!

FACT magazine's Top Twenty UK techno tracks.......

UK Techno isn't a genre as such, but it remains a criminally overlooked part of electronic music history. The period 1992-1996 was particularly strong, as myriad little-known producers released exceptional pieces of work, cross-pollinating a variety of styles and precipitating a whole slew of new genres.

British musicians have a knack of taking an existing sound and doing all sorts of peculiar, beguilingly eccentric things to it. Consider how Soft Machine approached rock music in the 1960s, unwittingly birthing the prog behemoth and making it unfashionable. A similar fate arguably befell the simplistic early sounds of US house and techno. By 1993 early breakbeat had begotten Hardcore, and Drum ‘n’ Bass was well on its way to becoming a totally separate strain, while under the umbrella of Warp records, a number of prodigiously talented artists - Aphex Twin and Autechre among them - were emerging with something that was still techno, but beginning to sound very different indeed.

The age of mass raves was now virtually at an end, with only the (now legendary) Tribal Gathering events left, along with the embryonic stages of the Big Chill. Club nights such as Lost, Sabresonic, Final Frontier, Atomic Jam, The Orbit, Voodoo and House of God sprung up to fill the void. The blossoming of Warp’s progeny was complemented by a host of similarly impressive homegrown production projects such as B12, LA Synthesis and The Black Dog. The sound of Americans Robert Hood, Jeff Mills and Dan Bell, invited by Steve Bicknell to play at Lost, set in motion a "minimal" trend that would see the flowering of such labels as Ifach and the aggressive thunder of The Advent and Bandulu, not to mention the more industrial approach of Birmingham's Downwards.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s second wave would influence the likes of Kirk De Giorgio, Ian O’Brien and Steve Pickton, an, in Brighton and Edinburgh, ever so slightly isolated talents such as Neil Landstrumm and Cristian Vogel would begin to cultivate their own ideas of what techno was and could be. Kiss FM in London even had its own radio show dedicated to the genre, hosted by Colin Dale.

Yet by 1996 the music itself and attitudes within clubs was changing, and not altogether for the best. Whilst undoubtedly the DJ of the 90s, Jeff Mills' three-deck approach - which had laid to waste many a dancefloor during an epochal period of '94-'97 - had begun to influence a new army of producers and DJs who were singularly interested in the monolithic dynamic of "chunky" techno, a sound encapsulated and influenced not just by Mills’ own Axis productions but also a slew of compressed Drum Code records coming from Sweden. Melody and emotion were sacrificed to this relentless minimalism, and from a DJ's perspective, it was soon more about how many records you were mixing rather than whether the tracks themselves were any good.

An era of looped techno had begun, and in my opinion it damaged some areas of the scene permanently; numbers in clubs dwindled rapidly, crowds only interested if the big US DJs such as Mills, Hawtin or Derrick May happened to be playing. Nonetheless, the contrast between the quality of British techno records released now and in 1995 is utterly startling, with only a handful of producers still pushing the genre forward. Like those prog rockers in the late 60s, many musicians in the field realised the genre's limitations, and sought to experiment elsewhere.

So what’s the point of this article? Artists such as Aphex Twin, Dave Clarke, Autechre and Underworld have all sustained considerable artistic and commercial success over the past decade and a half. And before you start tapping your keyboards in anger, i'll tell you now: none of those acts appear on this list. They've already received the exposure they deserve elsewhere. What the 20 records that I have chosen will go to show is a veritable goldmine of talent and ideas exists beyond the well-documented big guns; one that shifted the focus of techno away from its American roots. Hopefully you don't need to be reminded of the outstanding qualities of Aphex Twin’s 'Quoth', of Black Dog Productions, or of Autechre’s 'Eutow'.

Furthermore, there are many facets of the UK techno that aren't represented in this list, such as the burgeoning free party scene embodied by the anarchic Spiral Tribe, whose influence on Dutch labels such as Bunker is not to be underestimated; nor is there space for the UK tech-house scene that emerged from South London. I have also steadfastly avoided mentioning the Gescom/Skam/Warp influence because to me it's almost a separate genre that grew out of the period. This is of course a personal view, but I've taken care to include records and labels whose influence can really be felt in contemporary techno.

The likes of Luke Slater and Tony Child [Surgeon] cast a long shadow over the new breed of slick techno typified by labels like Sandwell District and countless other faceless 12”s emanating from Berlin's Hardwax, constructed almost precisely for playing at Berghain. People are falling over themselves in blogland to chime in about how good these new acts are. I say that they’re doing nothing new at all - and 15 years down the line, that’s simply not good enough. Go back and listen to the originals.

Militias and Drug Gangs go to war for Rio

In 1982, Rio de Janeiro had a lower crime rate than New York City. This was also the year that the Calabrian Mafia began using a South American smuggling route affectionately known as the Cocaine Corridor. Throughout the next decade, much of the powder going up American and European noses came over the Andes and through the Amazon jungle before passing through Rio, home to the busiest port in Brazil. The export business flourished, but something unforeseen happened—the city’s large middle-class fell in love with the drug they were helping to push to the rest of the world.

If you’ve been following the media’s coverage of the favelas throughout the years, you probably already know how militias and gangs gained so much power. For the rest of you, here’s a brief history lesson. The booming local snoot market gave rise to three drug-trafficking gangs: the Red Command, the Third Command, and the Friends of the Friends, a group that is rumored to consist of former military-police officers. The traffickers rapidly took over Brazil’s mountainside slums—known as favelas—and started to make lots of money and kill lots of people. Of course, the cops followed, and corruption began to rot everyone’s soul. Soon the police formed illegal militias to fight the narcotics gangs and extort money from the favelas they were “protecting.”

“The militias really started when local store owners began to pay some police officers to kick homeless people off the sidewalks,” said a schoolteacher who refused to give her name. “They’re really just off-duty police and some firemen, but they create a parallel power. It’s very difficult for us to talk about it because when you do that you become a target.”

Over the past 20 years, there have been more than 100,000 reported murders in Rio. According to a 2008 United Nations report, police forces are responsible for almost 18 percent of all deaths within the city. This means cops have been killing nearly three people per day for the past two decades. It’s a paradox because, according to its GDP, Rio is the third-richest city in South America. But the violence isn’t happening among the wealthy. It takes place within the clusters of these homemade shanties, nearly all of which are controlled by either a drug gang or a militia. The lack of public services and persistent drug-related violence are suppressing forces in the favelas, creating a vicious cycle that makes it virtually impossible for residents to leave. No matter how pretty or cool City of God made the favelas look, a lot of the people who live in these regions are hardworking folks who would get the fuck out of there if they could.

I am an American who has lived in Brazil off and on since 1991 and currently work as an urban planner for an international NGO. I decided to write this article after signing up at a new movie-rental store in my neighborhood. They asked me to fill out two pages worth of personal info, which I thought was unusual. Right before I was about to check out my first DVDs, I saw a giant homemade Batman logo painted on the ceiling. It is the tag of a local militia called the League of Justice that has a leader nicknamed Batman. I realized that I had just handed all my personal information over to them. I decided to try and get some answers by posing as a drunk American tourist. I knew that if the wrong people caught wind of what I was really doing, there was a reasonable chance of being drawn and quartered or put in the “microwave” (a form of execution where tires filled with gasoline are piled around you and ignited).

A former coworker of mine in Rio lives in a community controlled by a militia. She refused to let me visit or use her name, believing it would be far too dangerous. So I telephoned to ask whether she’d rather live in a favela run by drug lords. “I pay my taxes, I have a right to security, and yet I still have to choose between the bandits or the militia,” she said. “The error is not which one you choose. It’s in the lack of options as a citizen in a state where the police don’t do what they are supposed to.”

For 25 years, politicians have said that they don’t have enough funding, manpower, or weapons to solve the problems of the favelas. They see it as an ongoing war, and residents say the police use this label as justification to torture and kill whomever they want. “The policemen’s salaries are humiliating and absolutely insufficient,” says Luis Soares, a former Rio de Janeiro state assistant secretary of security. “This has resulted in a large number of police working on their off days to provide private, informal, and illegal security services.” So far, the militias have made untold millions from this practice.

According to a report by the NGO Global Justice, last year police in Rio “officially” executed 1,300 people, mostly blacks with no known ties to drug gangs. The common practice is to shoot them in the back at close range, execution-style. Soares says militias cycle shifts of as many as 30 uniformed men toting machine guns and two-way radios who circulate throughout the community looking for trouble. They register residents, issue receipts for their services, and hold neighborhood meetings. “Militias seem to have a more modern style of domination,” he says, “but we know that they aren’t that different from the drug gangs. This becomes obvious in the excessive ways they dole out ‘punishments’ using methods such as rape.”

Today, things are more mixed up than ever, and no one knows the difference between the good guys and the bad—some militias are no doubt working in collusion with the traffickers, and everyone’s fighting one another. It’s gotten to the point where you can’t walk into a favela without getting permission from a group of heavily armed, nervous teenagers who are so hopped up on blow and Red Bull it wouldn’t take a lot for them to accidentally squeeze the trigger.

Marcelo Freixo is a state senator who led a recent parliamentary investigation of the militias. He has been subsequently marked for death and has good reason to fear for his safety. Militias routinely torture and assassinate politicians, journalists, and other officials who attempt to investigate their organizations. He agreed to a phone interview but answered my questions in safe, bureaucratic language. I asked him why no one has been able to control the militia problem. “The biggest obstacle is a lack of will on the part of the government,” Freixo said. “They are completely ingrained in certain sectors of Rio’s political culture. When there are already ex–police chiefs, city councilmen, and even federal congressmen involved, it makes it very hard to eradicate them.”

When I asked him whether he was afraid of being assassinated, he said, “I am a public servant trying to represent my electorate the best I can in Rio de Janeiro. You have to expect the threats.”

Last year, three journalists from the O Dia newspaper were reporting on the militia controlling the favela of Batan, which is on the west side of Rio. They were kidnapped and tortured for seven hours by uniformed police officers and plainclothes militia leaders. In addition to the beatings, they were forced to play Russian roulette and were suffocated with plastic bags over their heads. Reporting on the militia phenomenon since then has mostly been limited to stories on the arrests of various dirty public officials due to federal police stings. These groups make it virtually impossible to report on the situation, and few outsiders know what’s really happening in the favelas. Corruption will certainly continue to grow unchecked until everyone’s either rich or dead. The former won’t be happening any time soon for the residents of the favelas, so all that’s left for them to do is to go to bed every night with hopes that a stray bullet won’t find its way into their sleeping bodies.

Ireland's best (Polish) DJ.........

Polish export Matjazz has sent me one hell of a mix for his Chop Shop debut, dude has been doing his thing up in Dublin for some time now and gotten himself quite a following. For those of you outside of the capital who might not of heard of him yet have a little read of this; “I was born in highly industrialised Silesia, in south of Poland. Surrounded by communist block of flats, I was quickly exposed to the old school hip-hop movement. Although, I tried to spray some graffiti pieces, however, I realised that music is the medium in which I want to express myself. At the end of the 90’s together with couple of friends, we started djing in Jazz Club Fantom. Apart from hip-hop, we mixed releases from Ninja Tune and MoWax. Also, a huge influence had Polish Jazz on me, especially, that most of the artists come from my area, for example Big Band Katowice. The main problem during those times was the availability of vinyls on the Polish market. That’s why I often travelled to Holland to work there over a summer and to spend all my saved money just to expand my collection and bring some fresh sounds to the Silesian scene. In 2002, Jazz Club Hipnoza was opened in Katowice, and with it the possibility to support many Polish as well as international artists, like The Herbaliser, Dj Food & DK, Dj Vadim, Skalpel, to name just a few. However, the stepping stone was when I moved to Dublin in 2004. Straight on, together with Dj Stu, we set up Breakology and have started to organise gigs in Dublin. Later on I started to co-operate with Dj Lex Woo and Mc Little Tree, spinning more tropical and afrobeat sounds. Together with Dj Jazzbin and Dj Handsome Paddy we set up nights called Go 4 It, where we mix on 4 decks. The huge mixture of people that I met in Ireland, their cultures, and music that they play has got a massive influence on which music I mix. I am open to a massive variety of music sounds and try to show it in my sets. This mix is just a fraction of what I play, so check the website for forthcoming productions. And now enjoy it “

I've noticed some randomers on Facebook in the last week saying how upset they were by Grey's Anatomy; some even professing to having shed tears because of it's 'tragic' storyline. Now, I know fuck all about Grey's Anatomy, other than it's a medical drama on T.V. - which has obviously reached it's conclusion for this season in the usual way these things tend to: a typically cliched, overly-dramatic emotional-rollercoater scenario - what I don't understand is how these morons can get so upset about a fictional show, yet are seemingly oblivious to the very real tragedies in the world: when's the last time you say someone on Facebook (or anywhere else, fo that matter) expressing their anguish about Third World Debt, The AIDS epidemic in Africa, civilians being bombed by the Yanks in Afghanistan, or the 300 or more homeless people sleeping on the streets of our capital every night of the year?? Just a thought.

Not so pretty........very fucking vacant.

R.I.P Andy Hughes

"Andy Hughes, (born 11th November 1965 - died 12th June 2009), was an English electronic music producer from Harrow, Middlesex ^[1]. He is most known for his work with The Orb, where he helped mix and produce Orbus Terrarum, Orblivion, and Cydonia, as well as The Orb's singles from this period. Hughes left The Orb during the production of Cydonia, which was reworked after his departure. He also did some additional original production work and performed remixes for The Cranberries and Tangerine Dream.

Hughes died at the Liver Intensive Care Unit at Kings College Hospital in London after a short illness on June 12, 2009."

If, like me, you don't believe in adhering to other people's rigid rules and ideas regarding the world of work, then you might find this article interesting. What's the point in breaking your fucking back every day from 9-5 just because you feel you 'have' to, or other people say you should? If you want to, then fair enough, go right ahead.....but if you'd rather relish what little time we have on this planet, experiencing as much pleasure as possible in the process, then don't feel you have to apologise to society because you'd rather drop out and start a New Age Hippie commune in West Cork..........fuck 'em if they can't take a joke - at the end of the day, we're all just food for the worms anyway, but by the time all the 'slaves to the clock' learn that, it will be too late.......................

Today I’d like to talk about some of the notions in our society which are misleading our young people and causing a lot of unnecessary misery. Firstly, the idea that you must earn a living. Within the notion of “having to earn a living” is the assumption that you don’t automatically deserve to be alive. For some reason this tends to make people feel somewhat depressed. I have it on the highest authority, however, that the only way to really earn a living, once and for all, is by being born (and I’m talking here about physical birth, not any religious metaphorical mumbo-jumbo). After that you deserve to relax.

Another misguided concept that I’d like to shoot down is the belief that you should be responsible. This whole idea puts people under tremendous strain, because you end up feeling responsible for all your imperfections. Society holds us accountable if we don’t comply with its definition of our responsibilities. You don’t choose your genetic make-up or the conditions in which you grow up, yet all the unfortunate things that happen are your fault. It’s time we let go of this burden of false responsibility.

What we are really talking about here is that strange phenomenon called masochism. It is my belief that we are a deeply masochistic society. A prominent politician recently said “if it isn’t hurting, it isn’t working”. This statement was calculated to appeal to our need for the type of dogma that insists we must suffer. Any belief which maintains that it’s our duty to endure pain, is guaranteed to be popular.

All of this is against the natural order of things. If God/Buddha/Allah/Evolution/Extraterrestrials (delete as appropriate) wanted us to have a hard time, why did he/they/it give us such an enormous capacity for pleasure – our brains are juicy pleasure organs, not guilt machines. The divine, or whatever, doesn’t talk to us in terms of duty and effort – it whispers peacefully to us of fulfilling our deepest longings and desires.

Indeed. Found this while arsing around the 'net a few nights ago and it's wicked.......really, really enjoyed it. It was put together by a guy from Tel Aviv called Barak (AKA Skunkride), who hosts a weekly radio show out there, and also runs the Balaganjah podcast site, where you'll find lots more Dub and Reggae goodness. Killarney isn’t the first spot in Ireland that springs to mind when you think of street art but recently the Kingdom’s tourist trap has been making the national headlines as the canvas for one of Ireland’s up and coming street artists. Vango told Irishstreetart.com that he first became interested in graffiti when he read an article about Banksy and discovered the stencil method. Since then he’s been obsessed with street art. The artist said “I wanted to see some of it around my town so I decided to start. I first started four months ago with the rats like Banksy and Blek Le rat and then moved onto my own bigger pieces.” Vango has of late including a sculptural element to his work and a hopes to develop a 3d graffiti portfolio.

Intinn, from Galway, have been steadily making a name for themselves on the Reggae scene in Ireland for the last few years, and last Sunday I had the pleasure of seeing these lads for the first time, and they totally rocked The Big Chillum @ Dolans, Limerick. Bought the album while I was there and it's quality........essential for those into their Roots and Dub, and there's a touch of Drum n' Bass on there aswell. Have to give major props to their frontman, Cian, who, after their set, joined the selectors upstairs for some impromptu toasting over the tunes............his chatting over Barrington Levy's 'Murderer' got probably the best reaction of the day (photos of that action coming soon). Anyway, check the vids below n' grab the album ASAP.
